Talkmagic Toastmasters – Club Meeting No. 205 (04/03/2017)

March 5, 2017 by Harry Ramsay Leave a Comment

The meeting was a pre contest held to enable members get ready for the actual club level contest to be held on 18.3.2017.
The atmosphere was a bit tense feeling like pre boards.
Specially keeping sync with the venue :‘ St.Vincent Palloti College ‘
To add to the tense atmosphere was the change of the familiar regular classroom to an alien 1st floor classroom.

The pre contest started with the energetic opening address by SAA TM Annie

The pre contest was chaired by TM Srivatsan. His professionalism was evident in his superb handling of the show.
The first session was for the prepared speeches showcasing the 3 contestants :
  • TM Sharanya
  • TM Anindita
  • TM Jane
This was followed by the Table Topic Session  which had higher participation.
The topic given was, ‘It’s better to be feared than loved’
Participants were:
TM Shruti, TM Muzib, TM Jane, TM Sharanya, TM Anindita and TM Anu.
Finally the results were announced by the Chief Judge TM Geetha.
And the winner for both both Prepared speech and Table Topics precontest was Toastmaster Anindita (Lady Shakespeare).
Sincerely,
Talkmagic Toastmasters Ex-Com

P.S.- The interview session conducted by Contest Chair in between the sessions was great.

The topic for the TT session was similar to my mental condition. I love all my fellow talkmagicians but am a bit scared of some which prevented me from dropping out of the contest.
Thanks to Srivatsan for continuous follow ups. And to the veterans without whose guidance we would be stagnant.
Last but not the least the cherry on the cake was the impromptu birthday party thrown by Prakash.
Actually the yummy cake is all that we remember.

Talkmagic Toastmasters – Club Meeting No. 198 (14/01/2017)

January 14, 2017 by Harry Ramsay 1 Comment

‘Pongal O Pongal’ was the phrase that rang through the meeting as we welcomed the Spring Season with energy, enthusiasm & excitement.

The theme for the meeting was ‘Pongal O Pongal’ and the word of the day Tantamount.

SAA Toastmaster Annie took center stage with confidence and shared a beautiful story about how Abraham Lincoln went from humble beginnings to becoming one of the greatest presidents of America.

Her address concluded with the message that the resolution to succeed is important and if you had the resolve, the job is already half-done.

Club President Toastmaster Shashidhar Hegde impressed us with an inspiring tale about Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the new chairman of Tata Sons & how his success can be attributed to the way he thinks.

And he drew a parallel to Toastmasters, and how we think different and bring the best out of ourselves.

His energy & magnanimous stage presence made the tale even more interesting.

Toastmaster of the Day Srivatsanathan Swaminathan took center stage with his calm, confident demeanor and unveiled the mystery behind the Pongal Festival.

In addition, he laced humor into his introductions beautifully by calling our speakers Chakra Pongal, Ven Pongal & Sugarcane.

A CC2 speech by Toastmaster Shruthi drove home the point that we need to teach children the importance of money, and offer them practical opportunities to use money and learn from them wisely.

Then we had a CC8 speech by Toastmaster Anindita.

A champion at humor, Anindita took something as mundane and simple as ‘Table Salt’ and turned it into a ‘White Beauty’ that we all can’t have enough of.

Seasoned Toastmaster Prakash Francis delivered his ACS7, a keynote address with pomp & flair.

With 2 enchanting real-life stories, he revealed the secret to achieving our New Year resolutions by making use of the pleasure & pain principle.

Toastmaster Feba Peter took center stage as the Table Topics Master & provided an informative & educational session on the importance of practicing in a Table Topic and how life in itself is a Table Topic.

Her calming presence encouraged 4 guests to take center stage & present a speech on various topics.

General Evaluator Jane Placid took over the proceedings with high energy & provided a brief but comprehensive evaluation on the meeting and what we can do to improve our club.

She was well-supported by Timer Anu, Grammarian Neelesh Singh & Aah Counter Ajith.

In addition, individual evaluators Toastmaster Muzib (for Shruti’s speech), Toastmaster Harry (for Anindita’s speech) and Toastmaster George (for Prakash’s speech) gave us constructive feedback points for the speakers to improve on.

Overall, with almost 30 attendees and 5 plus guests, the 198th Meeting of Talkmagic Toastmasters was a full paisa vasool.

Kudos to Talkmagic Toastmasters (The Pride of Bangalore Toastmaster Clubs), District 92 & Toastmasters.

Keep going!

Sincerely,
Talkmagic Toastmasters PR Team

No Sweat Public Speaking – 3 Keys To Rock It Like A Pro Even If It’s Your First Time

January 10, 2017 by Harry Ramsay Leave a Comment

Do you have a speech that you need to present soon, but feel nervous about it?

Does the thought of presenting before a big audience frighten you?

If so, you’re not alone. It’s normal.

Almost every human being is biologically engineered to develop a fear towards public speaking.

Several studies have revealed that humans fear public speaking more than the fear of death.

Yet, we have several accomplished orators that have set the stage ablaze with their words of courage and conviction.

Take Winston Churchill for example, who suffered all his life from a Speech Impediment whose speeches now are sought after by millions and millions looking for inspiration.

There are countless other souls who’ve risen above their fear of public speaking and delivered speeches that have moved hearts.

If they can do it, so can you.

With that said, here are 3 No Sweat Public Speaking keys to rock it like a pro even if it’s your first time…

1) Prepare Your Speech

You can’t rock the stage like a pro if you haven’t prepared for your speech. A prepared speech will calm and soothe your nerves and it’ll enable flawless delivery on the stage.

There are some people who are good at giving impromptu speeches when they’re on stage. It just comes naturally to them.

But that isn’t for everyone. There’s always a chance of you going blank as soon as you see the audience  on stage.

To prevent this, the best thing you can do is to prepare your speech beforehand and know exactly what you’re going to say.

You don’t have to memorize your entire speech, but make sure you have an organized flow of speech ideas in a notepad.

And with each of your speeches, to come out on top like a pro, make sure you memorize the first line and the last line of your speech.

First impressions and last impressions count all the time, and they count even more on the stage.

So memorizing your first line and reciting it right off the bat will showcase your preparedness and confidence. Everything else will easily flow from there.

2) Know Your Audience & Purpose

While you prepare the script for your speech, there are 2 things you need to keep in mind:

a) Your audience

b) The purpose of your speech

These 2 things determine how you start, how your speech flows and how you conclude.

With every speech that you give (whether it’s a presentation at work, a project at school or a fundraiser speech), you are basically trying to get the audience to react or respond to something (your message).

Even if your speech is educational, it still has to have a purpose. Without a purpose, your speech is dead even before you begin.

The next thing you need to consider is your audience. Who is the main person that you’re trying to move with your speech? Is it your colleagues, your bosses or children?

Once you know who your audience is, you have to figure out what catches their attention and present your speech in a way that it captures their attention and resonates with them throughout the speech.

You can’t deliver the same presentation that you give to a group of scientists to a group of 5th graders. You must understand your audience, their comprehension abilities and customize the speech so it makes sense to them.

3) Practice & Polish Your Speech

Once you prepare your speech, it is incredibly important to practice your speech in front of an audience, reflect on it and then polish it further. No speech is perfect right off the bat.

Request your friends or family to gather in a place and consider presenting your speech before them.

There’s a big difference in practicing your speech in front of the mirror on your own and practicing your speech in front of other people when they’re making eye contact with you.

For most people, the ideas they have flowing in their head ebb away as soon as they make eye contact on the stage with someone.

… which is why practicing before a group of people is important. It will prepare you for such situations.

If you can’t find a helpful support group that can help you practice & polish your speech, we recommend that you look at visiting a local Toastmasters Club.

At a Toastmasters Club, you can deliver your speech to an audience, get your speech evaluated by seasoned speakers and find ways to improve your presentation.

Presenting before an audience at a Toastmasters Club will provide you with a hands-on experience of what it’s like to present in public.

In addition, it’s also a good platform where you can evaluate other elements of your speech such as body language, nervousness, blank-outs and handle it accordingly.
